Bankers have long been familiar with the federal government’s efforts to combat money laundering. With the passage of the Corporate Transparency Act on January 1, 2021, these efforts will extend to private companies as the Treasury Department seeks to prevent the use of shell companies to hide the origins of illegally-generated money. When the CTA goes into effect, companies will have a duty to file reports with the government that identify all owners of “beneficial interests”. It’s a far-reaching law full of nuances and ambiguities. Learn how you can advise your small business clients of their compliance obligations.
